—Lightning Reed's Plants vs. Zombies Heroes description |
Lightning Reed is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. He is a quick electric plant who specializes in dealing light damage to multiple zombies at a time.
As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Lightning Reed has appeared in six games.
Origins
Based on his appearance, it is likely that the Lightning Reed is based on the bullrush of the Typha plant family, also referred to as the reed or cattail in English.
His name is a pun of "lightning rod," a piece of metal put on top of a tall structure to protect it from lightning strikes; "lightning," a sudden electrostatic discharge occurring during thunderstorms; and "reed," the real-life plant that this plant is based on.
History
Plants vs. Zombies 2
- Main article: Lightning Reed (PvZ2)
Lightning Reed's first appearance in the series is in Plants vs. Zombies 2. He is unlocked after Day 9 of the Wild West and serves as a counter to the Chicken Wrangler Zombie. He attacks quickly with weak electric shocks that hit multiple targets and can naturally target zombies a lane higher or lower than him.
He is a member of the Fila-mint family, who boosts Lightning Reed's damage by 60 and lets his electricity hit an additional 10 zombies while he is on the lawn. His Plant Food effect has him summon a storm cloud to attack a random zombie on the lawn, dealing 160 damage, moving to another target if its current target is defeated. This cloud lasts for 15 seconds before disappearing, meaning the max damage it can put on a target is 2,400 damage.
Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 and Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville
- Main article: Lightning Reed (Spawnable)
Lightning Reed next appeared in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 and reappeared in Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville as a spawnable Potted Plant.
He fires a stream of lightning at a zombie ahead of him, which can spread to nearby zombies in an arc before having to recharge.
Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars (China only) (Archived content)
- Main article: Electric Grass line
Lightning Reed also appeared in the Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars as a Brave type plant and is the first plant in the Electric Grass line, evolving into Magnifying Grass and then into Thunder God Grass. He fired electric shocks at zombies and specialized in stunning large groups of enemies.
His active ability was Discharge! which dealt damage to the frontmost enemy and all enemies in a cross shape around the target.
His soulmates were members of the Watermelon line for a boost to his critical hit chance or members of either the Flytrap line or members of the Charm line and Dragon lines together for a damage boost.
Plants vs. Zombies Heroes
- Main article: Lightning Reed (PvZH)
Lightning Reed appears in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes as a Premium Rare Plant.
He costs 2, has 1/2, Amphibious, Splash Damage 1 and is a member of the Smarty class.
Plants vs. Zombies 3
- Main article: Lightning Reed (PvZ3)
Lightning Reed's most recent appearance is in Plants vs. Zombies 3, where he is a 6 cost Common Shooter Plant.
Like Plants vs. Zombies 2, he fires chain lightning that can even hit zombies above and below him, and is also able to fire at flying zombies.
His Plant Food effect is called Power Surge, which causes Lightning Reed to release a discharge of lightning bolts, dealing continuous damage to any zombie that is targeted, as well as any zombie that the lightning chains to. His Tacobility is called Forked Lightning which lets him fire an additional arc of lightning, hitting the second closest zombie in his lane.
