History
Plants vs. Zombies
- Main article: Pumpkin (PvZ)
In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as all Chinese spin-off games based on it, Pumpkin is unlocked after beating Level 4-7. He is able to be planted over other plants, and is able to have other plants planted within him. Pumpkin has the same amount of health as a Wall-nut and does not have any method of attack, making him a covering shield that saves the player lawn space.
His main drawback is that he costs more than twice the amount of sun as a Wall-nut (125 sun compared to Wall-nut's 50), preventing him from being an outright replacement. There are also certain plants that Pumpkin is unable to be planted over, Cob Cannon due occupying two tiles, Tangle Kelp and Sea-shroom due to only being plantable in water with no way to support Pumpkin, and Grave Buster due to only being plantable on graves.
Plants vs. Zombies Heroes
- Main article: Pumpkin Shell
Pumpkin next appears in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes as the Triassic Rare of the Guardian class. Here, he costs 3, has 2/4 stats and is a Squash plant.
Like his mainline appearances, a plant can be put inside of him with his Fusion trait, giving whatever plant is planted over him his 2/4 stats, even if he has been damaged or debuffed.
Plants vs. Zombies 2
- Main article: Pumpkin (PvZ2)
After not appearing in a mainline title for ten years, Pumpkin would make his long requested return in Plants vs. Zombies 2 in the 2019 Arena season Pumpkin's Safety Season. Pumpkin can once again be played over other plants to provide an extra layer of protection with his high health. Pumpkin costs 25 more sun but has a faster recharge compared to the first game.
In Plants vs. Zombies 2, there are a new type of plant based on Pumpkin's ability, vine plants, who all allow other plants inside of them like Pumpkin. Despite functioning identically to vine, Pumpkin is not categorized as a vine plant in the International version.
In the Chinese version, however, Pumpkin is considered a vine plant and functions differently due to how vines were reworked in the Chinese version. In the Chinese version Pumpkin cannot be planted on his own without another plant, and if a plant expires while inside Pumpkin, Pumpkin will slowly wither away and expire himself.
He is a member of the Reinforce-mint family and gains an additional 8,000 health as well as instantly activating his Plant Food effect when he's on the lawn. His Plant Food effect gives him armor that absorbs 8,000 damage or a single Gargantuar smash, as well as activating the Plant Food of the plant inside of him, if one is inside.
