Solar Sage
- Not to be confused with Sage Sage.
“ | ” | |
Solar Sage is a plant in Plants vs. Zombies 2 introduced in the 9.0.1 update. If zombies get too close to Solar Sage, Solar Sage will transform any zombies near her tile into an Enlightened Zombie and then despawn. As a flying plant, Solar Sage can be planted directly on water tiles in Big Wave Beach without the aid of a Lily Pad.
Enlightened Zombies move across the lawn backwards, cannot attack or be attacked, infect other zombies, and leave a trail of sun behind for one to collect every five seconds.
Origins
Solar Sage is based on the garden sage (Salvia officinalis), a perennial evergreen subshrub with a long history of medicinal and culinary uses. Solar Sage in particular resembles the 'Icterina' cultivar of sage, known as the 'golden leaf sage'.

Strategies
Solar Sage is mostly useful for getting rid of some annoying zombies in a pinch by deleting them, with the added bonus of giving out sun as she costs nothing upfront. Solar Sage is also a great plant for dealing with Newspaper Zombie, due to her being able to kill him without triggering his anger rush after losing his newspaper. Solar Sage can be placed in the back to maximize the amount of sun that the zombie may give you.
Solar Sage is also usable in the early part of the game where players still planting sun-producer plants. She can be planted at the last column (on the left) of the lawn when the first zombie arrives and it will get transformed. This will buy time for the players to collect more sun, delaying the arrival of the first wave of zombies and help players to focus on planting other damaging plants instead.
A boosted Solar Sage can easily deal with a whole crowd of zombies at once, especially with dangerous ones such as Octo Zombie, or zombies with high health, such as the Brickhead Zombie. In the Arena, this can be used to defeat multiple zombies at once and earn many points, especially if those zombies have armor or are near the start of the lawn. A boosted Solar Sage acts similarly to a free Cherry Bomb, except that she doesn't damage zombies she can't kill.
To maximize the effect of defeating many zombies at once, you can combine her with Thyme Warp to send zombies back to the front of the lawn. This can be counterproductive if the player needs high sun production, so it is better to stall many zombies in one spot using plants like Wall-nut before using Solar Sage to defeat them.
It is a very bad idea to use Solar Sage against Explorer Zombie as he can burn her before she has the chance to use her ability, unless Explorer Zombie's torch is extinguished. However, the zombie can be transform when she is placed after the zombie's torch already past the tile border because the plant literally touched the zombie's back instead of on contact with the torch. This can be apply to other zombies that not consume plants like Wizard Zombie, MC Zom-B and etc.
Avoid bringing Solar Sage in worlds like Far Future and Neon Mixtape Tour, as most zombies in that world will just eat/push/destroy/deactivate the plant instead of being turned into Enlightened Zombies. Additionally, do not plant her in front of a large group of zombies unless they are immobilized or Solar Sage herself is boosted, as a current bug exists where zombies can eat her, even while she is transforming. Zombie like Glitter Zombie can destroy her upon planted when the Pop Jam is played while Boombox Zombie prevent Solar Sage from activated.
It is not advised to bring Solar Sage in levels where the players are required to not losing a certain number of plants. This is because Solar Sage need to be touched by zombies for it to transform them. When Solar Sage transformed the zombies, it is counted as losing plants.
You can use Sweet Potato or Hot Date with solar sage to attract zombies, the more zombies that are attracted there will be more sun zombies produced by one Solar Sage, Thus meaning more sun will be produced.

Trivia
- Solar Sage suffered from several serious bugs (all of them were fixed in the 9.2.1 update):
- She could be used in Last Stand, Sun Bombs and even Dark Ages - Night 14, despite giving out sun and the game did not even properly registers her as a sun-producing plant - the game would warn the player to bring sun-producers under normal circumstances.
- Zombies illuminated by her could still be harmed by several sources including lasers from Gargantuar Prime and Turquoise Skull Zombie, or create extreme amounts of splashes on plankless lanes in Pirate Seas despite being a hovering entity. The Zombie Medusa could even spawn multiple marble slabs as she repeatedly fails to petrify them.
- Digging her up gave back sun if the player has shovel upgrades, even though she costs no sun, with the game currently registering the shovel as getting it used by the zombies.
- She can still get eaten by zombies if they have higher eating strength, notably seen in Penny's Pursuit.
- The beam effect she uses is recycled from the Enlighten-mint.
- The Enlightened Zombie created by Solar Sage has no Almanac Entry, unlike the Imp Pear Imp although both zombies are generated by plants.
- If Solar Sage is planted on Shine Vine, it makes more sun on being planted and if then smashed by a Gargantuar, the amount of sun produced is also increased.
