Umbrella Leaf is a minor recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. In all of her appearances she is able to protect any surrounding plants from a specific threat with her large collection of leaves on the top of her head.

As of Plants vs. Zombies: Match, Umbrella Leaf has appeared in three games.

Origins

While the exact plant Umbrella Leaf is based on is never outright confirmed in any game, she appears to be based on the mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum), due to the positioning of the leaves and her flower's coloration in Plants vs. Zombies 3.

She might also be based on the real-life plant of the same name (Diphylleia cymosa).

Umbrella Leaf's first appearance in the series is in the original Plants vs. Zombies as well as all Chinese spin-off games based on it, where she was the fifth plant obtained in the Roof area.

Umbrella Leaf is able to protect all plants in a 3x3 area from aerial threats that may descend on them such as thieving Bungee Zombies and damaging basketballs lobbed by Catapult Zombie. She is able to deflect these threats by flaring up her leaves and bouncing them away when they reach her area of influence. However she is unable to protect against Imps thrown by Gargantuars.

Plants vs. Zombies Heroes

Umbrella Leaf's next appearance is in the turn-based mobile game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes, where she is a common rarity Mega-Grow fighter in the Colossal card set. She is a member of both the Flower and Leafy tribs.

She costs oneSunPvZH.png to play, has 1HeartPvZH.png, and has the Team-Up trait, allowing for another plant to be played in the lane she occupies. Umbrella Leaf's ability causes all plants in her lane and in adjacent lanes to be UntrickableAltBig.pngUntrickable, making them immune to all zombie tricks while still allowing plant tricks to be played on them.

Umbrella Leaf's latest reappearance is in Plants vs. Zombies 3, first appearing in Begonia Boulevard, Level 130 and costing 2 sun to plant. Like her appearance in the original Plants vs. Zombies, Umbrella Leaf protects plants in a 3x3 area from aerial threats. These threats include lobbed projectiles and zombies who can swing onto plants.

Unlike her previous appearances however, Umbrella Leaf has a limited number of uses, which is visually indicated by the number of petals on her flower and her leaves deteriorating. After her number of uses are up, Umbrella Leaf will disappear, requiring the player to replant her for further defense against aerial danger.

Trivia

Umbrella LeafAS.png
  • Umbrella Leaf was considered for addition in the ill-fated Chinese exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars. She dealt damage to all enemies on the board, but shared all damage taken with every plant that surrounded her. It is currently unknown why she ended up being scrapped.
