This page records the music used in the Plants vs. Zombies series. Here is a list of the known composers who’ve made music on the series, along with what music they’ve written.

Laura Shigihara composed the music for Plants vs. Zombies, Plants vs. Zombies for Nintendo DS (collaborated with Morihiro Iwamoto on the soundtrack[1]), Ancient Egypt's waves (Guy Whitmore did the Final Wave’s extra percussion[2]) and victory theme & the scrapped Pirate Seas theme in Plants vs. Zombies 2. Stan LePard composed the music for Plants vs. Zombies Adventures. Peter McConnell composed a majority of the music for Plants vs. Zombies 2 & Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, and the entire soundtrack for Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare & Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville. Feiyu Music (绯雨音乐) composed the music for Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars[3]. Becky Allen composed the music for Plants vs. Zombies Heroes. Barry Dowsett composed the music for Plants vs. Zombies 3.[4]

Several composers have helped compose just one or a few songs in the series:

In Plants vs. Zombies 2, Chris Ballew composed Zombie Time[5], Korby Sears composed the Pianist Zombie’s Theme[5], C. Andrew Rohrmann composed the Zen Garden themes[5] & Barry Dowsett composed the Z-Corp Takeover and The Zombosseum II thymed event themes. In the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2, LeShiya Audio (乐石涯音频) composed Renaissance Age, Heian Age and the upcoming Zombie Scene music[6] & Suihua (虽华) composed Parkour Party[7]. In Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, Ricardo Almeida composed Great White North (except it’s minigame theme) & Seeds Of Time, using Peter’s audio files to remix his songs.[8]

Two of the composers of the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2 (the first one composed Kongfu World, Sky City and Steam Age & the second one composed Fairytale Forest) and the composers of the entire soundtrack of Plants vs. Zombies Online are currently unknown.

Plants vs. Zombies

Area music

Day

The Day music is called "Grasswalk."

Grasswalk's sheet music

Night

The Night music is called "Moongrains." This track is the only one with a different time signature (2/4, while the others are played on 4/4) and overall sounds in the huge waves.

This music also plays in Zombiquarium.

Pool

Watery Graves' sheet music page 1

The Pool music is called "Watery Graves."

Watery Graves' sheet music part 2

Fog

The Fog music is called "Rigor Mormist."

Roof

The Roof music is called "Graze The Roof."

Other music

Mini-games

Most of the Mini-games (Wall-nut Bowling, Wall-nut Bowling 2, etc.), 1-5, 2-5, 3-5, and 5-5 feature the track "Loonboon."

Dr. Zomboss Battles

Level 5-10 and the Mini-game Dr. Zomboss's Revenge feature the track "Brainiac Maniac."

Levels X-10

Levels 1-10, 2-10, 3-10, the Mini-games Column Like You See 'Em and Air Raid, and Brain Busters feature the track "Ultimate Battle."

Puzzle

Level 4-5, Vasebreaker and I, Zombie levels feature the track "Cerebrawl."

Credits

The credits sequence features the track "Zombies on Your Lawn."

Game Over

The game over music plays when a zombie enters the player's house. It is associated with two biting sounds, a "NOOOOOOOO!" scream and "THE ZOMBIES ATE YOUR BRAINS!" text, and then followed by the "GAME OVER" (or "You survived for (number of flags that the player completed) before dying a GRUESOME ZOMBIE DEATH!!" in Survival Mode) dialog box. In Zombiquarium ("All your pet zombies have perished!"), Last Stand (mini-game and puzzle versions; "You survived for (number of flags that the player completed)!"), Vasebreaker Endless ("You made it to a streak of (number of streaks that the player completed)" with the same losing message also appears in I, Zombie Endless), and I, Zombie (non-endless levels; "You lost all your zombies!"), this only plays without a biting sound, scream and "THE ZOMBIES ATE YOUR BRAINS!", and it is possible to skip the music by restarting or exiting the level while the music plays.

Trivia

Specific to Plants vs. Zombies

  • "Rigor Mormist" is a portmanteau of "Rigor mortis" which means "a recognizable sign of death where the muscles stiffen," and "Mist" which means "fog" which indicates the Fog Level.
  • "Ultimate Battle" was originally intended to be used for Melolune, one of Laura Shigihara's games. The game designer, George Fan, overheard the song and requested it for use in Plants vs. Zombies, given that Shigihara is still allowed the use the song for her own game.
  • "Graze The Roof" is a portmanteau word of "graze" which means "to put" which probably indicates the fact that Bungee Zombies put down Ambush Zombies in Roof levels, or "to eat," which indicates the fact that zombies eat the plants, and the phrase "raise the roof," which means "to produce noise.“
    • "Graze" also means to touch or scrape lightly in passing. This may refer to the zombies traversing the roof, and their rather slow movements.
  • "Grasswalk" is a portmanteau of "grass," which indicates the lawn with which there is grass, and "cakewalk," which means "something that is extremely easy to do," which indicates that the Day levels are the easiest levels in Adventure Mode.
  • "Loonboon" is a portmanteau word of "loony" which means "a person who behaves in a strange way," which probably indicates the zombies, and "boon" which means "happy and cheerful," which fits the melody of the music.
  • "Cerebrawl" is a portmanteau word of "cerebral," which means "relating to brain," which indicates that the purpose of the zombies is to eat brains, and "brawl," which means "rough, noisy fight."
  • Levels 1-10, 2-10, 3-10 and the Mini-games Air Raid and Column Like You See 'Em are the only levels to have a music piece called "Ultimate Battle," because Level 4-10 has no music played and 5-10 plays Brainiac Maniac.
  • There is also an unreleased track called "ZomBotany". It was supposed to be played during the final battle with Dr. Zomboss in 5-10 and Dr. Zomboss's Revenge.[9]
  • There is an infrequent glitch that usually occurs on Pool levels, where the music will randomly change from Watery Graves to Grasswalk.
    • This also occurs with the Zen Garden on the DS version. It is unknown whether this occurs elsewhere.
  • "Loonboon" was originally supposed to be twice as fast as it is currently.
  • The only music played in Plants vs. Zombies that is not in a minor key is Zen Garden (C major). All others are in minor keys.
  • The music in seems to intensify during a huge wave of zombies.
    • These are called "Horde Themes."
    • This feature is missing from the Android and iOS versions.
    • This music plays through the whole level in the DS version.
  • There is no Fog level that uses the "Loonboon" and "Ultimate Battle" tracks.

Specific to Plants vs. Zombies Adventures

  • The soundtrack composer, Stan LePard, is also known for his contribution on various media soundtracks, most notably for composing the Windows XP Setup music "Velkommen."

Specific to Plants vs. Zombies 2

  • The music is longer because, unlike in the first game, the music is not designed to loop.
  • Some of the music are remixes of music from the first game. For example, the Player's House and Modern Day have a remix of "Grasswalk," and Kongfu World is a remix of the seed selection music.
    • Laura Shigihara composed the piano sheet for the mainlines of Ancient Egypt theme. However, only the Outro, Ultimate Battle, Demonstration Minigame and Losing themes for the Ancient Egypt theme were made by Peter McConnell.
    • In addition, there are also remixes of "Ultimate Battle" and "Brainiac Maniac" in all worlds except Neon Mixtape Tour (which don't use them), and all Chinese exclusive worlds (due to Chinese exclusive world's music were not composed by Peter McConnell).
    • Modern Day also has a "Graze the Roof" and a "There's a Zombie on Your Lawn" remix.
  • Since the 6.3.1 update in Plants vs. Zombies 2, all levels play their world's theme. Ultimate Battle and Demonstration Mini-game soundtracks have been removed.
  • Since the 1.8.0 update in the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2 on iOS and 2.0.0 update on Android (consider that all world except Neon Mixtape Tour on Android version using incomplete first wave music from Ancient Egypt from 1.5.0 to 1.9.0), Kongfu World's boss battle levels (Ultimate Challenge and Daily Challenge) uses the level theme instead of the Boss Battle theme.
  • From 1.5.0 to 2.0.0 in the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2 on Android, all world's music, Ultimate Battle music and Brainiac Maniac were deleted. Due to the music deletion, all world's music were replaced by low quality incomplete Ancient Egypt first wave (while choose your seed part replaced by beginning notes of Player's House music) except Neon Mixtape Tour jams (however, they still in low quality and certain sections are cutted).
    • The iOS version since 1.5.0 also downgrade all music's quality, removed all Ultimate Battle, Demonstration Mini-game and boss battle (except Kung Fu World) music and cutted most selection of music section (Ancient Egypt using same track that Android version uses, Pirate Seas and Wild West only keeps beginning notes from first wave music, and all other worlds deleted one mid-wave music).
    • Although Android version since 2.0.0 begins restore music, it only restored post-1.5.0 version music using on iOS.
    • To date, without counting Chinese exclusive worlds, only Jurassic Marsh and Modern Day music are in high quality and completed in both iOS and Android version.
  • All music from post-Modern Day world in Chinese Version recycled "Choose Your Seeds" music, beginning notes from Final Wave music and Winning Music used on Modern Day.
