I, Zombie Endless is the tenth and last level of I, Zombie in Plants vs. Zombies, Plants vs. Zombies: Journey to the West, and Plants vs. Zombies: Great Wall Edition. It is the endless level of I, Zombie. When the player reaches a streak of ten in I, Zombie Endless, they will earn the achievement Better Off Dead. The level has an unlimited number of streaks where the player can continue as far as they can go as long as they have at least 50 or more sun.

The objective is the same as previous levels. However, sun is carried over for each streak so if the player is unable to buy an Imp which is the least expensive zombie in the level by having less than 50 sun, then the player loses the level immediately upon entering the next streak even if the objective to eat all 5 brains have met which is one of the three ways for the level to end, the other are if there are no zombies present in the lawn with less than 50 sun during a streak and the level is restarted.

List of possible combinations

Each streak has a possibility to be a certain layout. In all of the following layouts, one to eight Sunflower(s) are included (Puff-shrooms replace Sunflowers the further the player goes), dependent on the amount of sun the player has, as well as the player's streak. The Scaredy layout, has more sunflowers than usual (up to 13) and is also the very rare and easiest, as only one imp may still be able to clear one lane with other zombies on nearby lanes while Scaredy is hiding. The frequency of the scaredy layout notably affects how far a player can go.

Other plants in each layout:

Note : * = layout that probably appears after you restart by resetting or losing the level.

+Plants in different layouts Composite Control Instant Kill Peas Explosive Stars and Spikes Magnet and Fume Scaredy
Peashooter 1
Sunflower 1 to 8 1 to 8 1 to 8 1 to 8 1 to 8 1 to 8 1 to 8 6 to 13
Wall-nut 1
Potato Mine 1 4 9
Snow Pea 1 3 9
Chomper 2 3 8
Repeater 1 4
Puff-shroom 0 to 7 0 to 7 0 to 7 0 to 7 0 to 7 0 to 7 0 to 7 0 to 7
Fume-shroom 1 4 9
Scaredy-shroom 12
Squash 1 3
Threepeater 1 1
Spikeweed 2 3 3 9
Torchwood 1 1
Split Pea 1 3 4
Starfruit 1 8
Magnet-shroom 1 1 8
Kernel Pult 1 3
Umbrella Leaf 1 1

The magnet and fume layout is probably the most difficult one, due to the fact that Magnet-shrooms can stop the Digger Zombie, Ladder Zombie, Buckethead Zombie, and Football Zombie, and the Fume-shrooms can kill Dancing Zombie, as well as its Backup Dancers, and Imps quickly. Hence, only the Conehead Zombie, Pole Vaulting Zombie, and Bungee Zombie, which also are all weak, can be used initially. The player will need a lot of sun for this setup, unless the placement was bad.

Trivia

  • The exploding layout is similar to ZomBoogie, except that sometimes, a Sunflower gets replaced by a Puff-shroom.
  • Although this I, Zombie level is endless, the streak record has a limit of 2,147,483,647 (using Cheat Engine). After that, the streak will be negative but the level will still continue.
    • This happens because 2,147,483,647 (231 - 1) is the maximum value of signed 32-bit integer in computing, and attempting to reach a value higher than this results in an integer overflow.
  • If the player runs out of sun to place a zombie by having less than 50 sun during a streak or upon starting the next streak, the losing dialog box says "You made it to a streak of (number of streaks that the player completed)" and only the game over music plays. The said losing message is also used in Vasebreaker Endless.
    • In iOS and Android versions, the dialog box title says "GAME OVER", while on console, DS, and PC versions, the name of the level is instead used (I, Zombie Endless).
      • The reason why the name of a level is used on console, DS, and PC versions as the dialog box header instead of the generic "GAME OVER" text is because on Lawnstrings.txt, the text says "[ENDLESS_PUZZLE_DEATH_MESSAGE]: You made it to a streak of {STREAK}", with [ENDLESS_PUZZLE_DEATH_MESSAGE] part is programmed to display a level name (I, Zombie Endless) as the header.
    • Due to the game over music being played when the dialog box appears, it is possible to skip the music by exiting the game over screen through restarting (Try Again) or exit the level (Main Menu/Menu/Quit (depending on the version)) while the music plays.
    • When the next streak starts and the losing dialog box appears due to having less than 50 sun (not able to place any more zombies), the sound for entering the streak and game over music will play together, with the game over music will last to be played before everything become silent.
