The multiplayer beta of Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 was an open multiplayer test that lasted from January 14, 2016 to January 18, 2016. Unlike the full release, the multiplayer beta was limited to all Xbox One players, with Xbox Live Gold required to go online or play multiplayer.

The beta was teased on January 7th 2016, with the official YouTube channel having released a beta trailer for the game on YouTube, Officially announcing the multiplayer beta for the game.

Gameplay

Multiplayer features

The Backyard Battleground was limited in the beta. The features that could not have been used were:

• Split-screen
• Garden Ops
• Graveyard Ops
• The sewers (the entrance being blocked by a brick wall)
• Private play and solo play for the Multiplayer Portal
• Quests from the various NPCs around the backyard.

Characters

• The only variants that could have been used were Rock Pea, Vampire Flower, Yeti Chomper, Zen Cactus, Frozen Citron, Mob Cob, Druid Rose, Scuba Soldier, Zoologist, Computer Scientist, Roadie Z, Moto-X Star, Pylon Imp, Z7 Imp, Cozmic Brainz, and Captain Sharkbite.
  • Other variants could be encountered as AI in the Flag of Power.
• Crunch mode did not play music.
• Captain Sharkbite used Captain Cannon's primary ranged weapon, Extend-O-Cannon.
  • However, AI Captain Sharkbites used the primary ranged weapon in the final release, the Shark Laser.
