Why'd it get so dark all of a sudden? This can't be good. Oh well, hope you survive the night!

Crazy Dave

Level 4-10 is the fortieth level in Plants vs. Zombies, Plants vs. Zombies: Endless Edition, and Plants vs. Zombies: Great Wall Edition, and is the ninth of the Fog levels, being a conveyor-belt level level. When this level is beaten for the first time, the player obtains the Cabbage-pult.

During this level, a storm takes place and rain is shown, and the screen will remain dark until lightning flashes, giving the player a brief moment to see what's happening.

If the player plays this level again after completing Adventure Mode at least once, the Zombie Yeti makes its first appearance here.

Difficulty

  • The entire lawn is actually blackened, only showing the user interfaces at the screen, making it more difficult to predict where will zombies appear. Lightning strikes on the other hand will only give minimal time to lighten the lawn occasionally for the players to plant in the necessary tiles.
  • The level is very hard to beat in the Nintendo DS version, because Jack-in-the-Box Zombies explode after a very short while. This makes the level more difficult. Also, plants take much longer to come via conveyor-belt.

Strategies

  • Plant Cacti in the very first column on the lawn. Their damage is normal like all peashooting plants.
  • Plant Split Peas in the fourth column on the lawn. Avoid planting them in the second squares because one of the zombies might enter the house if a Lawn Mower is used. Also, avoid planting them in the pool, since there are no Digger Zombies there.
  • Because the Magnet-shroom is given, it's best to have good defenses to avoid letting them get eaten. Plant at least four of them on your lawn and put a Pumpkin on four of them. For the ones on the pool, only plant them behind the Starfruits.
  • Only plant Starfruit in the pool when you have Lily Pads, because it is unnecessary to plant Split Peas on the pool lanes.
  • In case when low on Cacti and more Balloon Zombies showing up, use a Blover to blow them away. Remember that Blovers can only blow flying Balloon Zombies away.
  • Only plant Sea-shrooms behind Starfruits because three ambush zombies will pop up on the final flag.
  • Whenever a Zombie Yeti appears on the second run through of this level, use a Pumpkin to let it stay longer. Once it is killed, four diamonds will be received. The level gets more difficult once two Zombie Yetis have shown up, due to having high toughness.
  • Pausing the game does not pause thunder, so you can see the zombies or your plants without waiting for the thunder to occur by simply pausing the game.

Trivia

  • There is not actually any fog in this level, despite being on the Fog stage.
    • The same applies for Level 4-5, although it is in the Night stage.
    • Fog from the previous levels could lead to the events of this level where it may signal an incoming storm.
  • The gimmick for this level also appears in Lost City - Day 9 in the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2.
  • This is the only level in the game to have no background music during gameplay. The background soundtrack used for this level is the rain drop.
    • The only music that plays in this level is the victory music when completing a level and game over music if a zombie enters the player's house.
  • This level, Level 1-1 and Level 1-5 are the only levels in which a player encounters additional zombie types when replaying Adventure Mode.
  • This is the only "all-out attack" level to have another wave when replaying.
  • When replaying this level in Quick Play, Zombie Yeti is not guaranteed to appear, even after the player has encountered him in replaying this level in Adventure Mode. So the player must play through Adventure Mode levels to encounter him.
    • This does not apply to PvZ FREE after the 2.4.0 update, since the Quick Play mode has been removed as the Adventure Mode has been changed to a level selector.
    • Out of all of the tenths levels, this and Level 5-10 are the only levels with plants from different levels (4-10 has Lily Pads), and based on mini-games (4-10 being Dark Stormy Night and 5-10 being Dr. Zomboss's Revenge) although the former is a cancelled mini-game.
  • Even when the player cheats to have Planterns, the screen is still dark.
    • This is because the plant is not programmed to illuminate the thunderstorm's darkness thus there are no codes present for the Plantern's ability to illuminate the darkness caused by thunderstorm in the game and the plant is only coded or programmed to illuminate the fog. Same also goes with its cancelled mini-game counterpart Dark Stormy Night.
