From Plants vs. Zombies Wiki
Scorched Earth is a super-rare plant superpower trick card in Plants vs. Zombies Heroes and a member of the Solar class. It costs 1 to play, and its ability gives all zombies on ground lanes -1/-1. Its zombie counterpart is Acid Rain.
Origins
Its ability to affect multiple zombies at once may be a reference to the Scorched earth policy: razing a large area with weapons of mass destruction in order to either flush out/destroy some unreachable targets, or to destroy anything that might be useful to the enemy.
Its description mentions SPF, which is a relative measure of how long a sunscreen can protect you from ultraviolet rays.

Strategies
With
This trick is similar to Weed Whack, but Scorched Earth can affect more than one zombie at the cost of the stat reduction being weaker. It is best used during the early game to destroy weak threats with 1 health like Disco Zombie or Cuckoo Zombie easily. Scorched Earth can also be combined with Chomper, Toadstool, or Whack-a-Zombie due to the fact that this superpower can lower the strength of zombies. However, Scorched Earth only affects zombies on ground lanes, rendering this superpower useless against zombies on aquatic lanes or the heights.
If you get this as your first superpower in the boss fight of Haunting at Morbid Manor, this can destroy the Haunting Zombies at the start of the mission, making the rest of the fight relatively straightforward.
Against
If you want to send out a threat with 1 health like Mini-Ninja or Tennis Champ and you suspect your enemy might use this, play it on the heights to prevent it from being destroyed by Scorched Earth. Having your strategy focus on stronger zombies is also a perfect way of countering this trick, as Scorched Earth is only powerful it if is able to immediately destroy many zombies.
