Cob Cannon is a recurring character within the Plants vs. Zombies franchise. He is a massive ear of corn that resembles an artillery piece, firing corn cobs with extreme damage.

As revealed by his almanac entries, Cob Cannon is also an accomplished lawyer based in New York, and has graduated from Harvard University. As revealed in the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2, Cob Cannon appears to have obtained his abilities after an incident occurred while visiting Area 51.

As of Plants vs. Zombies 3, Cob Cannon has appeared in five games.

Origins

Like Kernel-pult, Cob Cannon is based on the crop maize (Zea mays), also known as corn, a type of large grain plant.

He also resembles several types of tactical ballistic missile systems, specifically ones that fire a single missile.

In the original Plants vs. Zombies game, as well as Chinese spin-off games based on it, Cob Cannon appears as an Upgrade plant sold in Crazy Dave's Twiddydinkies. Cob Cannon is the most expensive Upgrade plant in the game, costing $20,000 in-game currency, and is listed as the last plant chronologically in the Suburban Almanac.

Cob Cannon costs 500 sun to plant but like all other Upgrade plants, Cob Cannon needs a preexisting plant, in this case Kernel-pult, to be planted on. Unlike the rest of the upgrades plants however, Cob Cannon requires two Kernel-pults to be planted side by side in order to be placed on the lawn.

Once planted, the player can click on the Cob Cannon and guide a reticle to anywhere on the lawn, the player can then click again and Cob Cannon will launch the corn cob onto an area that the player targets, dealing massive damage in a 3x3 area like a Cherry Bomb. The player can cancel targeting an area by right-clicking. Cob Cannon has a reload time of 34.75 seconds.

Cob Cannon would later make a cameo appearance in the third-person shooter game Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, appearing in the map Main Street. He is briefly renamed to "Corn Mortar".

He appears at the final objective firing defending the Garden Center from zombies by firing massive corn cobs at them. These massive cobs deal 70 damage to any zombie that is hit in the blast. Destroying him as a zombie rewards 250 coins.

Cob Cannon next appeared in the ill-fated Chinese-exclusive turn-based game Plants vs. Zombies: All Stars, here he was the final plant in the Corn line, evolving from Popcorn-pult, appearing with a drastically different design. He attacked zombies by firing high damage lasers.

His active ability was Corn Shelling, which dealt damage to three random enemies with the chance of stunning them for a turn (stunning Seagull Zombies for two turns instead). His passive abilities were Grilled Butter, which gave his normal attacks a chance to deal 110 more damage and stun enemies for a turn and Trajectory Correction, which let him deal 360 extra damage with 100% accuracy if his previous attack missed.

His soulmates included members of the Flytrap line for a damage boost, members of the Watermelon line for a health boost, and members of the Radish line and Dragon line together for a damage boost.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 (Chinese version) (China only)

Cob Cannon would make a long awaited return to the tower-defense titles in the Chinese version of Plants vs. Zombies 2, where he appears as a monthly special plant tied to the 2017 new years event.

Unlike the other returning Upgrade plants, Cob Cannon is not able to be planted on his own as a separate plant. Instead, like in the first game, Cob Cannon still requires two Kernel-pults planted side by side to be placed over.

Cob Cannon's reload time and damage have been altered to 50 seconds and 1200 damage respectively. His main upgrade lowers his cooldown time while his level 5 upgrade gives him two small corn missiles to defend himself naturally by targeting the zombie closest to him.

Cob Cannon's latest appearance is in the turn-based mobile card game Plants vs. Zombies Heroes as a Colossal Legendary Plant for the PvZH Solar Icon.pngSolar class. He costs 6SunPvZH.png, has 6StrengthPvZH.png/6HeartPvZH.png stats and when played, gives zombies in his lane and those adjacent to him -1StrengthPvZH.png/-1HeartPvZH.png.

Cob Cannon also has the Evolution ability, which allows him to activate an additional ability when played on top of another fighter card. When played on top of a card with the Team-Up trait, such as Kernel-pult, he will also instantly destroy a selected zombie.
